If you need convincing, here is the pitch: The Balkans offer the stunning scenery of Western Europe at a fraction of the cost. We are talking about delicious three-course meals for under $15, boutique accommodation for $40 a night, and interactions with locals who are genuinely happy to see you. Plus, the region is perfect for a road trip. The distances are short, but the scenery changes dramatically around every hairpin turn.

Just a short drive south of the famous (and crowded) Dubrovnik, Croatia, lies the Bay of Kotor. Imagine the Norwegian fjords, but with warm weather and Venetian architecture.

Driving inland, the landscape turns rugged and green as you enter Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city of Mostar is non-negotiable on your itinerary. The centerpiece is, of course, the Stari Most (Old Bridge). Originally built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, destroyed in the 1990s war, and beautifully reconstructed, it stands as a symbol of resilience.

Watch the Divers

If you are lucky, you will catch a member of the local diving club leaping from the apex of the bridge into the freezing Neretva River below. It is a tradition that dates back centuries. After watching the spectacle, lose yourself in the Old Bazaar (Kujundžiluk), where the scent of grilled meat and strong coffee fills the air.

3. The Chaos and Charm of Tirana, Albania 🇦🇱

Driving into Albania is an experience in itself. The roads can be a bit wild, but the destination is rewarding. Tirana, the capital, is a city in rapid transformation. It is colorful, chaotic, and incredibly cool.

Bunk'Art: History Underground

For a sobering look at the country’s isolated past, visit Bunk'Art 1 or Bunk'Art 2. These massive nuclear bunkers, built by the former dictator Enver Hoxha, have been converted into fascinating history museums and art galleries. It is eerie, but essential for understanding the Albanian spirit.

4. The Albanian Riviera: Europe’s Last Secret?

Head south from Tirana to the coast, and you will find the Albanian Riviera. Places like Ksamil and Himara offer crystal-clear turquoise waters that rival Greece or Italy, but without the price tag. 🏖️

• Eat: Fresh seafood caught that morning.
• Drink: Raki (proceed with caution, it is strong!).
• Do: Rent a kayak and explore the hidden coves that are inaccessible by road.
